Funding Our Court System by Cutting Entitlements

Legislative UpdatesOn Wednesday, South Carolina had a front-row seat to the ideological differences between conservative Republicans and liberal Democrats.

The debate began with a simple dilemma: How do we adequately fund our state judicial system so that both criminal and civil cases can continue to move quickly. Budget cuts to the system over the last several years have left our courts with very few reserves and staffing has been cut to the bone.

Protecting the Integrity of Our Elections

Legislative UpdatesThis week, the South Carolina House of Representatives once again approved a common-sense voting provision intended to prevent fraud and defend our voting system from abuse.

The legislation requires voters to simply present a valid photo ID when they cast their ballot in our state’s elections. Currently, poll workers have almost no means of positively determining that a voter is actually who they claim to be casting a ballot.

Crossover Week = Busy Week

Legislative UpdatesThis week was “crossover” week in the House – the deadline for the House or Senate to approve legislation and send it to the other chamber. After May 1, it takes a two-thirds vote for the other body to even consider the legislation.
So crossover week is a very busy week in Columbia as legislators work long hours to debate as much legislation as possible before the deadline.

While we debated dozens of pieces of legislation, three pieces in particular stand out to conservatives.

Protecting Education

Legislative UpdatesIt is no secret that our state is undergoing dramatic budget cuts.
It has been my position from day one that government – like every household – must live within its means. That means during tight budget years, the answer is to cut the size of government, not raise taxes to cover our budget deficits. That is a position that I know my constituents share, even if that means we must cut services to balance the state budget.

Fighting for Taxpayers

Legislative UpdatesThe House of Representatives approved our state’s budget this week after a marathon 23-hour session Wednesday night into Thursday.
No budget is perfect. I believe this budget is in line with our conservative principles because we cut the size of government, we did not raise taxes to plug the revenue shortfall, and we made tough choices about how to spend your tax dollars.

Forcing State to Live Within its Means

Legislative UpdatesThe House of Representatives will debate the 20010-2011 budget next week.
Debating and prioritizing the wisest use of your tax dollars is the single biggest responsibility you place on us as legislators. As a conservative, I start any budget with the premise that we are not spending the government’s money; we are spending your money.
